Battambang, KH – Vegetable gardens contribute to income during COVID-19 – 31 May 2021

Sokherm has been preparing new raised beds to plant salad and lettuce. He has built five each for salad and lettuce.

In two weeks time, he will harvest lettuce followed by salad. He normally produces 10 to 15 KG of lettuce or salad from one raised bed, which he sells for US$ 0.5 to US$ 0.75 per KG in the market. So the ten beds will earn between US$ 50 to US$ 100. His family’s main income comes from the vegetables and growing rice in the paddy field.

He uses the income to mainly buy food items and school materials for his children. During this COVID-19 time food and supplies are more expensive than normal, so Lei who works for our partner Healthy Life garden shop is assisting organic garden program families with compost, seedlings and natural sprays when he visits to mentor them.
