Mt Kilimanjaro, TZ – Employee seeing life improvements while excelling on the job – 15 July 2015
Lishe Bora employee Laurenti has made Mkyashi Primary School into a best-practice example garden that is raising the bar for how a vegetable garden can be consistently productive. He is being rewarded for his hard work with life improvements from a consistent salary.
Since he started caring for Mkyashi Primary School garden the garden is consistently harvested to provide food for school lunch. Crop rotation and efficient relay planting have been key practices to ensuring this consistent harvest.
In addition to working for Lishe Bora, Laurenti farms and keeps livestock at home. He has 7 children between the ages of 7 and 25 and before working for Lishe Bora almost all of his money went towards school fees. The extra income from Lishe Bora is allowing Laurenti to make other life improvements for his family.
Laurenti and his wife agreed to save all of his salary from Lishe Bora to continue paying school fees for their children. This would allow them to make other life improvements using income from agriculture and livestock. So far they have been reinvesting profits and have expanded their farming, chicken, and pig raising projects. Now they want to start putting money towards finishing their house. They plan to begin home improvements by building a cleaner and safer kitchen.
