Moshi, TZ – Kisangasangeni Primary garden – 20 Sep 2013

The Tupendane team have hired a local mama named Mama Christopher who has been working hard to get the Kisangasangeni school garden in good order.  The garden had previously encountered difficulties, so the team decided to focus on growing only 3 beds in order to identify what was causing the low productivity.

The team now believes that one factor contributing to the low productivity was that the water from the well is alkaline.  Therefore, they are testing using water from the nearby river.  They planted all 3 beds with kale, which is growing so well that it has been added to some of the school meals.

Having this success in the garden has encouraged the teachers, students and Tupendane team.  If the garden test continues to do well, the team will expand the garden back to the regular 12 bed size.
