Kikondo, UG – Family implements improved water harvesting system following community training – 1 May 2016
The HHM family attended the first Wamukisa water harvesting training on 3 April 2016. After attending the training, the family purchased a 1,000 liter water tank and installed a gutter system to feed it during the rainy season. A 20 liter bucket of water costs between 200 and 700 UGS (US 6 cents to 15 cents). This means that if a rain storm fills the tank to 1,000 liters, the family gets roughly US $3.00 to $10.00 for free.
“We have always used basic techniques to collect water,” explains the mother, “but this training helped us understand the benefit of saving water so we can see that it is good to be much more organized.”
The father of the HM family works in Kampala and comes home when he is able on the weekends. The mother attended the water harvest training and called her husband that week to request that he bring home the 1,000 liter tank. It is a big investment for the family, but they can see the payback. They are hoping that with the money they save each year they can afford new school uniforms for their seven children.
