Kikondo, UG – SMW family rebuilding their goat herd! – 31 Oct 2022
Wamukisa manager Michael visited the SMW family’s expanded goat rearing project just in time to help walk the flock home for the evening. After losing their father to COVID and all their previous goats sold to buy food during COVID lockdown, the family has managed to find opportunities to recover economically.
With Wamukisa’s mentoring, the family operates and maintains a FAITH garden and saves some income from it and other earnings with Zinabala VICOBA. SMW is an active part of the VICOBA and the YNM family staple crop growing group that provides them food and income. From savings, the family bought a hybrid he-goat which is improving the breeding quality of the goats the family now rears. Goat sales are now 200,000 Uganda shillings ($55) per month. From its agriculture and goat raising the family now has enough income to pay school fees for all their children at Kikondo Primary School.
The family dreams of more economic improvement and hopes to expand its goat rearing to land it owns in the village of the late SMW father, located in Masaka District. The four hour drive from Kikondo to that land will present transportation challenges.
