Utete, TZ – BBTT Girls High School sewing club is changing students’ lives – Feb 2025

KCM, in collaboration with Better Lives (BL) and Juhudi Women Empowerment, has launched a sewing training program at BBTT Girls High School, after receiving tailoring equipment in 2024 from visiting UK students who were hosted by their community.

The initiative aims to help BBTT students gain sewing knowledge and skills to make tailoring services sustainable, easy and enjoyable in the area. The girls are starting with repairing and stitching their uniforms, creating their own clothes, and progressing to making women’s reusable sanitary pads to support economically disadvantaged students at school.

This creates unity, cooperation and equality for all students with happier love and feeling to assist each other in educational life and achieve their dreams, since sewing services are currently found 5 Km away from school.

Through this collaboration, the students from UK through their host KCM, provided BBTT girls’ sewing club with a modern sewing machine, which uses a foot pedal and electric motor to improve sewing efficiency to save time.

Miriam, a trainer mentor from Juhudi Vicoba Women Empowerments group, visits the school weekly for an hour training of students’ club best sewing practices. The club members have completed the first phase of learning how to sew on a machine. They are now able to sew ID initials on their school uniforms. The next phase will involve learning to cut and design fabric to create various styles, with the students eager to offer these services to fellow students.

This training provides students with valuable skills for self-employment and future financial independence. Through this collaboration, KCM, BL and Juhudi are not only empowering the girls with sewing knowledge but also helping them build a sustainable brighter future that will include sharing skills with other students and ultimately their own children.
