Utete, TZ – Katundu and Mapinduzi Primary Schools aim to build better learning environments – May 2024

Katundu (268 students) and Mapinduzi (865 students) Primary Schools are touched by the planned generosity of local social enterprise KCM and visiting students from Switzerland, Ireland, and UK, whose funding will breath life into several projects aimed at nurturing students’ health and academic achievement.

Katundu Primary School’s most pressing needs is the School Water Sanitation & Hygiene (SWASH) facilities. Repairing the school’s toilet block, its sewage system, painting its repaired walls, digging a 300-meter long trench to a water standpipe close to the toilets, and replacing handwashing basins and buckets. These are all needed to ensure sanitation and hygiene standards are maintained in the future with the assistance of ongoing mentorship by KCM.

The school dreams of establishing an organic garden because it has ample land with access to well water and water storage tanks. It envisions starting with a small garden that could sustainably provide nutritious food for the children, particularly those with special needs. The school is hoping the garden will encourage parents to contribute ingredients for a sustainable breakfast.

The school’s kindergarten also has needs like sleeping mattresses, and mats for the children to sit comfortably during lessons. The walls are plain, awaiting vibrant murals that would transform the learning environment into a place of joy that will inspire future academic performance.

Foreign school group visits to Kindwitwi are assisting KCM to support the schools. As a result, the Katundu and Mapinduzi Primary School communities are looking forward to a brighter future, where every child will have the opportunity to grow and succeed, nurtured by a school that cares deeply about their well-being and education.
