Utete, TZ – KCM expands Grow-own-Breakfast assistance to Siasa Primary and Utete Secondary schools – Jan 2024

KCM in collaboration with the village Vicoba volunteer families, has maintained relationships and trust in gardening production for a daily breakfast for school children and disadvantaged groups in the community. The Vicoba group has six members who volunteer their time and energy for gardening production and breakfast preparation for the sustainable feeding of the school’s children and the community’s needy groups.

The Vicoba volunteers assisted the KCM manager DFT and accountant ASN to reduce their working hours to two days per week, so that they have more time to develop their businesses and a sustainable way of life for their families.

Moreover, this Vicoba became an opportunity for KCM to expand the breakfast program to the other community schools like Siasa primary and Utete Secondary where they launched a GOB faith garden for the school children serving program. Siasa school specializes in feeding needy student groups like deaf, malnourished, mentality disordered and HIV affected children.

The symbiotic relationship among KCM and the Vicoba volunteer families create mutual benefits for both sides. KCM provides knowledge, and loan support to Vicoba families to assist commercial farming and businesses so that families can earn sustainable income and contribute to Vicoba savings in order to improve their lives and children’s education.

For instance, The village vicoba bank purchased a power spray pump to hire out to the farmers’ families who have fully paid the loan so they own the pump and its income goes to the Vicoba’s savings fund that is shared amongst the members at the end of each financial year.

KCM in collaboration with Better Lives, and the local farming officer are organizing possible solutions for the sustainable production and marketing knowledge to assist Vicoba families in commercial poultry and gardening to supply eggs, meat and vegetable harvests to Utete town and the tourist lodges because of the demand.

The Utete and Nyerere national park lodges and campsites have to order eggs and green vegetables from Dar es Salaam city, which is 5 hours drive away. This means that the Vicoba families can produce and supply for a sustainable income. MSC campsite in Nyerere national park is ready to buy leeks, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cornflower and carrots, and ready to connect more safari companies’ customers so they can save time and cost compared to buying from Dar es Salaam, said the campsite owner.
