Siem Reap, KH – UK school students assisted Peaksneng community this summer – Oct 2023
Two UK schools traveled to Peaksneng Rent-to-Own home community in Cambodia this summer. They learned about organic vegetable gardening techniques, through hands on training, and assisted local families to build vegetable gardens and toilets.
Traveling can be a beautiful experience, learning about different cultures and lifestyles first hand can be touching and moving. However, some beautiful places are also affected by many problems. Cambodia is one of those places. With its nice people, gorgeous nature, and rich culture, it’s a country that has a lot to offer. However, it also suffers enormously. It is a beautiful country, but most of its population still lives in need. Especially in the rural areas, where a lot of people lack sufficient food and adequate housing because of their extreme poverty, poor education and limited access to sufficient and nutritious food. As a result, malnutrition rates in Cambodia remain high for women and children.
In Peaksneng village, Peaksneng Thormacheat shop, is collaborating with the local church, Better Lives, True Adventures and UK schools to assist disadvantaged families and children to improved their lives. One of the most immediate ways to combat nutrient deficiency is to achieve food and income sustainability so that families can enjoy good health. Therefore, Thormacheat in partnership with Better Lives has adopted a vegetable growing standard practice called Food Always In The Home (FAITH) garden for production of nutritious vegetables to eat and also sell to earn income.
This year Peaksneng Thormacheat shop and the community hosted True Adventures and two UK schools. The UK students assisted the community with projects, and the experience even prompted some students to think about how they might help make the world a better place! This way, visiting students as well as the Cambodian students and their families benefit from the projects. At the end of the visits, the UK students expressed their gratitude to the Cambodian families for the opportunity to share, learn, feel grateful and enjoy the children’s smiles!
