Kilimanjaro, TZ – Two schools start Grow-own-Breakfast – 31 Mar 2022
Local social enterprise Lishe Bora has collaborated with the local community, teachers and students to successfully start organic banana and vegetable gardens for two primary school Grow-own-Breakfast programs, with the purpose of improving children’s health.
The students are eating more nutritious green vegetables, which is improving their health in a sustainable way because they are growing the greens. They are also learning organic gardening practices, which is improving their gardening knowledge and skills.
This program is a response to the challenge of the past breakfast of only maize porridge, which lacked balanced nutrition. The students’ health improvement will be measured by tracking their Body Mass Index (BMI). This will assist the school to see if the program is having an impact on the students’ health. The school is also tracking attendance and academic performance to see if improved health is assisting the children to perform better.
