Siem Reap, KH – Success at school starts at home and in the community – 28 Feb 2022

A Successful school year for children living in the Rent-to-Own (RTO) community starts at home. Take as an example the Weun Thi children: Samnang ,Marie, and Elizabeth.

Recently Marie and Elizabeth both received recognitions as one of the top students in their class. All of this achievement is assisted by living in the good environment of their home and the RTO community.

Based on the RTO manager Rey’s experience, a family with safe and stable housing is more likely to have children who perform well at school, show fewer health problems, less psychological stress and are more self-assured. Therefore, strong, secure and affordable homes contribute to happy, healthy and secure family members, especially the children. To have an affordable and secure home isn’t just about people having a roof over their head. It’s also about the benefits that come from having stability and safety, which many of us take for granted. Benefits that include a place to do homework, to rest, grow vegetables and fruit in the garden, and have peace of mind of knowing that the rent can be easily paid every month.

The Weun family own a small shop connected to their RTO house where they sell small items like biscuits, drinks and petrol. The children enjoying selling their products. They also have a great time harvesting fresh vegetables from their productive home garden to eat and also sell for income. The garden keeps the children busy, gives them enough food to eat and sell, and is a healthy environment.

However, life in the RTO community is not without a few challenges! For example their small shop needs capital if it is to grow by enlarging the shop and selling more items. The garden faces the same challenges that the other families face from stray animals coming to eat the vegetables.

The families in the community dream of their children going onto higher education, which they themselves were not able to do. They have been inspired by what they have experienced and learned from the local Peaksneng Thormacheat garden shop’s example.
