Kasaka, UG – Wamukisa lays foundations for expanding to Kasaka-Gomba, Uganda – 31 Jan 2022
Wamukisa is expanding its area of operations to Kasaka in the district of Gomba, where project manager Michael supervised Joseph and Henry building a latrine and a sturdy two room farm structure to house workers temporarily and store harvested crops. After completion, Michael will be able to efficiently supervise his farm. He can properly design and build, protect, operate, and maintain the farm, since he will have a worker who regularly reports and stays there.
Michael acquired 1 acre of farmland in Gomba, about 70 kilometers from Wamukisa’s primary project area in Kikondo, Mpigi district. Early in 2021, on that acre he planted 300 coffee trees and 200 banana trees. He expects to harvest and sell the first banana crop in October of this year. Coffee harvests will begin in 2023 and increase over the next several years. Since Michael is a Better Lives partner, he is eligible to participate in the savings program and loan program which helped him to fund building with a goal of earning income to improve and sustain his work. By forming a team which has agriculture and construction experience, and by establishing a base of operations, Wamukisa has taken important first small steps in the program life cycle to help families in Gomba.
Michael dreams this building will assist a productive farm that can expand to nearby available land and introduce Better Lives programs to families who live in the area. He hopes to start a demonstration FAITH garden and a piggery project as next steps.
