Kikondo, UG – Family enjoys benefits from maintaining their garden for a full year – 15 Nov 2019
BLC family applied to receive a FAITH garden from Wamukisa in August of 2018. Over a year later they are realizing the benefits from the savings their garden helped them produce.
The family grew vegetables diligently throughout 2019. A vegetable garden gives the family an opportunity to grow the same vegetables they would otherwise spend money on in the market. Without needing to spend this money, they can invest in other worthwhile projects and avoid reducing their daily nutrition.
In BLC family’s case, they took the money they would have spent on market vegetables and saved it in their local community bank, Zinabala. They used their savings to start a small, roadside petrol selling kiosk. After seeing how a simple garden can give them the opportunity to expand their income, they decided to also expand their garden.
However, despite their best efforts of maintaining their garden, the BLC family does not have enough water to irrigate their garden during the dry season which slows their ability to save.
After learning how to record their revenue and expenses, they hope to continue saving in order to expand into a petrol filling station.
