Siem Reap, KH – SL invests in land to increase family income – 31 May 2017
SLs vegetable garden was very productive, so he was able to save some money to help purchase an extra piece of land. Land that he uses for growing vegetables and raising ducks and chickens for selling. He did this so that he could pay for access to clean water and to help his grand-children improve their health and education.
The extra land has provided the expected extra income and a sustainable healthy food supply for his family. The grand-children are now growing healthy and happy, and help care for the garden. The garden provides a green environment that creates a happy feeling because eating the healthy vegetables means less sickness, and the home is cooler in the summer because the cultivated greenery helps cool the hot air. In comparison, hard packed dry earth radiates the hot air’s heat.
SL has faced a number of challenges that include: uncontrollable insect and bugs eating some of the crops, flooding during the rainy season, limited water during the peak of the dry season, and most of all the recent very low vegetable prices.
These challenges have not deterred SL from pursuing his dreams of building a simple home and water reservoir. He and his wife want to do this because they want to see their grand-children grow up as healthy, educated and productive members for their family and community.
