Battambang, KH – JS overcomes challenges to keep earning an income – 05 May 2017
JS lives in a village near Batambang, Cambodia where she grows morning glory vegetables and raises pigs for meat. She starting fattening piglets in 2016 at the same time as her nearby neighbor Lythieng.
She has managed to maintain three very green and productive beds of morning glory, and fatten two piglets despite the recent water shortages caused by hot and humid weather.
The pig buyer came to her house with a special trailer to buy the fattened pigs. She sold him two pigs weighing a total of 190kg. for US$2 per kg. so she received US$380 revenue. After paying off the US$170 loan for purchasing the piglets and feed, she earned US$210 income. She used this income to buy school materials for her children while saving the remainder for future family living costs.
Water shortages continue to be quite a challenge because while there were some rains on the local town, there were none on the surrounding villages. Even with this challenge, JS is ready to fatten more piglets and has contacted the Healthy Life shop to discuss a new pig loan.
Her immediate goal is to replace her home’s roof, longer term, she has a dream of sending her children to university.
