Battambang, KH – Boran dreams of becoming a nurse – 31 Jul 2015
Borin is 18 years old and currently in the eleventh grade. She lives with her mother and father and has a total of eight siblings. Like many other children, Borin’s family has had financial difficulties. Today, though they are still not wealthy, they are better off than they were because most of the older children can contribute to the family. Borin knows many people who have gone to the Thai border to work, but she notices that even though they work and bring home money, they have little opportunities for growth or progress. The jobs in Thailand are manual labor jobs, and most people who go to the border have to give up on their education in order to work. Therefore, Borin says that those who struggle to stay in school and get an education will be better off in the future because they will have more knowledge and with greater knowledge more opportunities.
Borin attended public schools for grades one through eight. Travelling to school was difficult during her seventh and eighth grade years since her house is far from the school, but Children’s Future was able to purchase her a bicycle, making travel much easier. Borin appreciated public school, but it did not offer her the extra classes she wanted to take. The hectic schedule and long days left her little time to help her parents around the house, and the lack of organization and rules in the school made her education feel disorderly. In addition, Borin was unable to make many friends in public school because some children do not like to associate with students who receive assistance from organizations such as Children’s Future.
However, Borin’s social life was not a significant concern for her as she was focused on studying diligently in order to achieve her goals. In her ninth grade year, Borin began attending Dewey International University. Borin loves Dewey International University because it is more organized and structured than the public school. Her schedule is more flexible, allowing her time to help her parents at home and take extra classes when needed. Since enrolling at Dewey International University, Borin feels that she has gained social skills, maturity, thoughtfulness, and intelligence.
Borin dreams of someday becoming a nurse. She believes that it will be a good job because it will allow her to help support her family and care for those in her village who cannot afford healthcare services. She wants to help her parents have a better quality of life and dreams of one day pursuing a Master’s degree. Borin’s favorite classes are Khmer language (in which she excels), chemistry and biology. During her free time she likes to listen to music and walk along the farmland to look at the scenery.
