The WMZ family has one of the oldest gardens in Kahe. Over the past nine months that the family has maintained their garden they have overcome a number of struggles. Most significantly, towards the end of 2013 they were devasted by the death of one of their daughters. During this time the family did not have the time or energy to look after their garden. However, they have since been able to recover and also recover their garden so they are now seeing significant benefits.

The family has also overcome the natural challenges that face gardeners including drought, heavy rains, and pests. They have overcome these challenges by following Tupendane Garden Shop’s advice and implementing best practices including mulching, daily watering, and proper application of organic fertilizer and natural pest repellants.Zackaria 2
The family of seven has one disabled daughter and they are very grateful for the opportunity to feed their children safe and healthy foods. Since starting their garden they have seen a constant supply of vegetables in the home. They have also been able to sell some vegetables. From October to December of 2013 the family sold 30,000 TZS (USD $18.75) worth of vegetables. They invested this money in a small kiosk business selling onions, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and fish next to their home. In the first few months of 2014 they profited 15,000 TZS (USD $9.38) from this business. From January to December the family sold 70,000 TZS (USD $43.75) of vegetables from their garden. They combined this with profits from their kiosk to buy a 20 liter bucket of cooking oil to sell in small amounts for a profit. To date, combining their garden and their business, the family has seen increased their capital by 129,000 TZS (USD $80.63).Zackaria 3
