Siem Reap, KH – Land mine victim feeds family – 26 Jan 2014
YC is a resident of Peak Snaing Tmai, Angkor Thom, he is married to PP and blessed with 4 children. He was a victim of a land mine and had to have his lower leg amputated. This meant he became disabled and has had to endure being trapped in a cycle of poverty. He has had a very difficult life because of having no opportunity to get a job and earn an income. A few years ago he established their own family farm with the help of his wife.
The family grew only rice and struggled to get enough food to eat. Over the years the number of family members increased but the size of the farm stayed the same and YC knew that they had to improve their farming techniques if they were going to be able to feed everyone, pay for education and healthcare, and improve the family assets.
A few months ago YC’s wife came to the garden shop’s farm and learned that they were helping families to improve their lives by growing organic vegetables. The shop team taught the family the FAITH gardening techniques for compost making and the benefits of ecological organic agriculture. YC was inspired to try some of these techniques and discovered that they worked well for his family. They are now determined to expand their garden and plant more vegetables for selling to the market. The family is also raising ducks and chickens on their farm for family consumption and for sale, so they will raise both the family nutrition and income.
