Dar es Salaam, TZ – WASH program – 31 Jan 2014

The fourth quarter of 2013 marked a successful close to the implementation of a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program in the Temeke Municipality in Dar es Salaam. The program promotes hygiene through education as well as the rehabilitation and creation of sanitation facilities at schools. The program in Temeke built 30 drop hole toilets at seven schools across the municipality. The largest recipient of toilets was Maendeleo School. 3,273 students and 72 teachers attend the school and they now have 20 new toilets to use. The head teacher says the toilets will reduce outbreaks of cholera in the community, improve school attendance, and enable students with disabilities to begin attending school.
