Moshi, TZ – M family – 6 Sept 2013
The M family wanted to learn how to grow a continuous supply of vegetables for the family, so that they could improve their diet, reduce their food bill, and earn extra income by selling surplus vegetables. Their land was well placed next to the river for water, but was a narrow strip so it could not accommodate the standard 16 meter by 36 meter vegetable garden of 6 beds wide by 2 beds deep.
The Tupendane team helped the family overcome this challenge by building a 4 beds wide by 3 beds deep garden. The team and family built a green mesh fence to help keep out chickens and small animals, and also planted Marygold and Lemongrass plants between the beds to help protect the vegetables against hungry insects.
The M family planted:
3 beds of kale
1 bed of mnavu
1 bed of occra
3 beds of ngogwe
1 bed of choroko
1 bed kunde
2 beds empty for future relay planting
Tupendane will follow up with weekly mentoring visits during September to help the family acquire the best techniques for cultivating the garden.
