Battambang, KH – Sreynal gives back – 9 Jul 2013
You take one look at 19-year-old Sreynal and you know she’s going places. She carries a bubbling, bright energy with her everywhere she goes. For the last four years, Sreynal has studied with Children’s Future and now she is about to finish high school. Sreynal has always been determined to learn and grow and be the best she can be. She loves the English language and has worked hard to strengthen her English speaking skills. She feels that her native language Khmer does not have as much flexibility to deeply express inner emotions and spirituality.
Sreynal recently shared with our Learning Center staff that she wanted to help with Children Future’s school programs in her free time; however, few teaching spots were open. In the interim, Sreynal strengthened her own English-speaking skills, a language she feels truly expresses her emotions.
About a month ago, three residential children approached our staff inquiring about how to further their English-speaking skills. Our staff was already teaching during the time the three children were free for extra English lessons. We didn’t want to disappoint these ambitious young students and we wanted them to know that we listened and heard their concerns — and most importantly, that we were going to do everything we could to make this happen.
Sreynal enthusiastically volunteered to tutor the three young students. Equipped with a white-board, markers and some text books, Sreynal and her class are now meeting twice a week in the garden hut. While Sreynal is strict with her students, they respond enthusiastically to her structure and teaching style.
