Moshi, TZ – Garden profits invested in chicken banda – 31 Dec 2014
The RKN family joined Tupendane’s FAITH Organic Vegetable Garden program in July 2014. When they started their vegetable garden they also began trying to save money.
Since July the family has been able to eat vegetables regularly and occasionally share with neighbors. Growing their own vegetables has helped them reduce their food bill and earn money by selling surplus vegetables. Spending less money and earning more has been good for the family’s finances.
Since starting their garden they have put aside 200,000 TZS (US$125.00). They are now using this money to invest in their chicken business. The family has kept chickens for years, but now they want to improve the business.
They have purchased materials to build a new chicken banda. Bricks, chicken wire, wood, and corrugated iron sheets will create a shelter for the chickens. Having good shelter means chickens stay safer, live longer, and produce more eggs because they feel less stress.
If this business is successful, the family’s next goal is to purchase more chickens, continue to improve income, and build a new house.
