Kilimanjaro, TZ – Kisuluni Primary School’s vegetable garden will face a water challenge – Feb 2024

Kisuluni Primary School students have continued to eat vegetables and are very happy to have them at school. They are now continuing with the cultivation of vegetables after the recent harvest because the school’s Grow-own-Breakfast vegetable garden has been providing green vegetables that contain nutritious vitamins and minerals that are good for brain development.

As a result children are doing well in school with attention and academic performance improving. The students are also learning how to grow vegetables. It is important to ensure the students receive adequate education about gardening so that when they finish school, they can support themselves by growing vegetables at home and selling them to meet their basic needs. More immediately, they can take the knowledge home to assist their family food supply.

The school vegetable garden faces a dual water supply challenge. During the hot dry season when the sun is very hot more water is needed, and the water supply during the rainy season is decreasing over time. The short term solution is to have enough equipment to carry water to the garden, so that sufficient vegetables can be grown.
