Moshe, TZ – Parent volunteers are assisting with building a school vegetable and banana garden where there was none – Feb 2024
The Tupendane team and Management has been able to make a successful small test vegetable and banana garden at Soko Primary school, which is a school of 206 children and 9 teachers. These children and their teachers for a very long time has been left behind without development partner support because of their poor land issues which requires high dedication to grow food.
Since last year Tupendane has invested their volunteering resources, knowledge and skills to train few children and teachers on how to build a small test vegetable and banana garden on their poor land. The garden is becoming successful and it has given some knowledge and skills benefits to the children, teachers and parents in the Soko primary area.
Together with the other benefits, the whole community’s awareness and recognition of available opportunities within their poor environment is highlighted by this trial of a small garden. We are now noticing higher enthusiasm among parents who are currently volunteering on the land clearing ready for expansion of the garden area to the right size required for enough harvest to feed the children and teachers everyday.
In the testing garden we are learning a challenge of some portion of the testing gardens not growing very well as compared to others and this is because of difference in the soil quality inputs we have been able to source. Tupendane’s dream is to continue to maintain the higher energy from the community by guiding them on the best practices with the quality of inputs required to raise more harvest in the area. Therefore, we are asking for other available partners like Better Lives and True Adventures’ students groups to join our efforts so together we can create this beautiful garden in the middle of rural Northern Tanzania.
