Ngara, TZ – Last year’s corn harvest was not sufficient to last until the coming May harvest – 28 Feb 2022

Mukibogoye and Mukirehe Primary schools are drawing on a corn reserve stock funded by Better Lives to close a corn supply gap for the schools’ Grow-own-Breakfast program. The students’ parents plan to rebuild the reserve when they harvest their fields in May.

The students will be able to maintain their health by having a complete daily breakfast at school as normal, and they will have time to dry the early harvested corn before eating it in their breakfast. The supply gap resulted from two challenges. In 2021 Parents donated less corn due to under performing harvests caused by late and less then normal rains. Secondly, the schools do not have enough farm land to produce enough corn and also beans to sustain the student breakfast’s yearly requirements.

SODAT and the schools dream of being able to serve a sustainable breakfast with the assistance of the parents contributing 5 Kg. of corn per student, which would refill the reserve stock.
