Kilimanjaro, TZ – Family uses garden to support school fees – 15 June 2020
JAM Family has been successfully managing their family garden since 2018. With the help of the garden’s savings and income from the mother’s clothes selling business, they have kept their two eldest children in school.
Running a vegetable garden for home consumption and selling surplus can gain big results for the family. Additionally, the mother runs a small clothes buying and reselling business that helps keep her children in school. The garden also produces enough that it supports the family’s grandmother to use at her own home. The family saves an additional 2000 TZS ( $0.86 USD) per week by not needing to buy vegetables.
104,000 TZS ( $45 USD) saved can likely pay for necessary things for their own family or even medicine if their child becomes ill. It helps pay for school fees, school supplies, and soap for the family.
JAM family is looking to expand her garden work, but they are waiting to be connected to the Mkyashi Water Project. The water project is holding off on adding members while they restructure.
While she waits to be connected with the water project, she will be purchasing a rain barrel to collect rainwater from her roof to expand her garden’s production.
