Moshi TZ – Mwangaria brings back is breakfast serving gardens after a hard year of flood recovery – 15 Oct 2019
In 2018, Mwangaria experienced devastating floods that not only took away their chances of having a school farm but also flooded their banana and vegetable gardens. Preventing them from serving any school breakfast. Fortunately, a year of good energy and work, the school is again harvesting vegetables to serve in their breakfast.
After the flooding in 2018, Mwangaria’s garden area was saturated with water longer than expected. Fortunately, their banana trees survived the flooding, but the school needed to allocate more time for their gardens. Thankfully, the community, school, and students worked together to restore vegetation to their gardens.
The school is now able to benefit from the vegetables in their gardens. Vegetable and Banana gardens provide students with the necessary leafy greens and fats needed in their daily breakfast in addition to the corn and beans that the farming activities provide. It also happens that they are going to soon begin eating the corn and beans from their farming activities starting next month! The combination of Bananas, corn, beans, and vegetables will ensure that each student has a full stomach to tackle their daily educational tasks.
While plenty of available land at Mwangaria, they are challenged by finding the right land to farm or have gardens. This area is prone to flooding and standing water, so the school has to find the right place to set up their next gardens.
They hope to have a fully self-sustaining farming and garden program. Mwangaria does not have access to electricity so they’re looking into using a solar pumping system to help them water their farms and gardens.
