Kikondo UG – KFN family on the move after big purchase – 15 July 2019
The KFN family saved over 800,000 UGS (USD $220) with the Kigasa Women’s Group. They combined their savings with a cash windfall earned from selling livestock and crops to buy a motorbike for 2,000,000 (USD $550) The motorbike will help them transport farm inputs and outputs more efficiently, increasing their income over time.
The KFN Family operates a farm and a pig pen. They knew they could be more efficient if they owned their own motorbike for transportation. The family saves money each week with the Kigasa Women’s Group VICOBA andsaved nearly half the cost, 800,000 UGS (USD $220), to buy a 2,000,000 UGS (USD $550) 2nd hand motorbike. Now they are able to efficiently move crops and livestock to market, and buy inputs like seeds and fertilizers.
The family’s farm is located far away from their home. They used to hire transport every day that they worked on their farm. The motorbike will reduce this cost, and they also feel encouraged to visit the farm more regularly.
The KFN family wants to expand their farm but, like many families in Kikondo, they are limited by space. They hope to buy a plot of land being offered to them by continuing to save in the Kigasa Women’s VICOBA.
