Kilimanjaro, TZ – Mkyashi Primary School students are maintaining their vegetable and banana garden – Jan 2024

Mkyashi Primary School students are maintaining their vegetable and banana garden that students from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida assisted them to build in May 2024. The visiting students assisted financially and by volunteering to assist with repairing a classroom building and buildingthe garden.

The students have just planted seedlings in some beds, following harvesting greens for breakfast from them. They have also placed mulch over the beds to protect the soil moisture from the extreme heat of the sun. The children are eating native pumpkin until the greens are ready for harvest.

The children are learning about vegetable and banana growing techniques, and the benefits of agriculture in general. More importantly, they are eating more vitamins and minerals than before, which is strengthening their immune systems and reducing absenteeism due to illness.

The challenges they are working to solve are less supply of vegetables during the hot season due to having less water for the garden, and stray animals eating and treading on the vegetables, and damaging the banana trees. The solutions are learning new techniques for protecting and operating the garden, especially during the hot summer season, and building a garden fence. Lishe Bora and Better Lives are looking into how they might assist.
