Ngara, TZ – Mukibogoye Primary School rainwater harvest system renovation is improving students’ lives – Dec 2024

Mukibogoye Primary School is making one step at a time toward sustainable water use with the renovation of its rainwater harvesting system. This improvement will ensure consistent access to water for school cleanliness and breakfast preparation, providing a lasting impact on both the students’ daily lives and their education journey

The school has successfully completed the rehabilitation of its rainwater harvesting system. The system is expected to collect 45,000 liters of water each year from the September to April raining season. This improvement will help ease the burden on students to carry water, firewood, and books every morning.

Before this renovation, the system was old, leaking and causing water loss before it arrived at the collection tank. This forced students to bring water from home to meet the school’s needs, because the local piped water system was unreliable and frequently cut off especially during dry seasons. The new rainwater system ensures a steady supply of water, relieving the students of this additional responsibility.

The school committee and the local village government have expressed their deep gratitude to SODAT and Better Lives for funding this vital project. The renovated system alleviates the daily water burden on students, supplies water for the daily breakfast, which assists attendance and performance growth. Moreover, the renovation has reduced the school’s water bills, allowing funds to be redirected toward other essential school needs.

This collaboration continues beyond the renovation, as both are committed to weekly inspections to ensure the long-term functionality of the system. This partnership is not only about maintaining infrastructure but also about freeing up students’ time and energy, enabling them to focus on their academic growth and dreams.

The school is laying the foundation for a brighter, better tomorrow by empowering students with the resources they need to progress towards self-reliance.
