Kikondo, UG – JFB family integrates pig raising with FAITH gardening – Nov 2024

JFB family mother has been operating a FAITH garden for the last 7 years. After realizing the health benefits of eating organic vegetables, she started saving for a piggery project so that she can have pig manure to help her make compost to nourish soils for healthy vegetables.

She has managed to save 500,000 shillings from January to November with Zinabala Vicoba. Every week the members meet to conduct business, share ideas, and collect savings deposits. By selling her extra organic vegetables to her neighbors, JFB mother was able to save this amount.

Withdrawing from her VICOBA savings account, she has managed to buy 3 piglets. She has started collecting manure which she will use to make compost with advice from Wamukisa. She’s sure to have compost she will use to nourish her 12-bed garden’s soil for healthy vegetables, amaranth inter-cropped with cabbage this season.

JFB mother finds the cost of feeds expensive, which will put the cost of rearing the pigs high. Her children have started feeding them with potato vines so that she can save on feeds. As time goes by and she has saved more money to invest in crops, she will be able to rent more land to start a staple crop garden so that she will have her own maize to make her own pig feeds. She hopes to realize profit from her pig project in the future but as of now she’s focusing more on the manure from her pigs, to nourish soils in her garden then maximize organic vegetable growing for her customers. Larger, healthier vegetable plants that reach the end of their growing season and are cleared from the garden also will provide more plant material for the pigs to eat.
