Siem Reap, KH – HLR family’s home garden is feeding the family and supplying neighbours and local market – Jun 2024

The HLR family are happy and healthy because they eat delicious vegetables from their chemical free home organic vegetable garden. They enjoy everything served to them by their mother because they like the fresh tastes of the different vegetables. Peaksneng shop team trained HLR about natural farming methods to help him improve his livelihood and to encourage healthy living at the same time.

A number of years ago, the Peaksneng shop team assisted HLR to transform his barren backyard into a productive Food Always In The Home (FAITH) vegetable garden. He now sells surplus vegetable harvests to buy extra items needed for everyday living, like salt, soya sauce, rice and seasoning to make their cooking delicious. He says “it feels good to sell organic products to our neighbors, knowing that it is grown safely using the organic method of farming”.

The father says that he does not need to spend a lot of money operating the FAITH garden, because he has the inputs the garden needs. He makes his own fertilizer with organic materials, which he gets from their surroundings. He also makes their own natural spray insect repellant, without exposing his family to harmful chemicals. He is earning from this livelihood venture by expanding his plot to include a market garden, and selling the produce to a nearby market as well as exchanging for other things with his neighbors. His products are in demand among buyers because they are naturally grown and have a fresh taste. HLR says “people are now more health conscious and prefer to buy my chemical free vegetables”.

In conclusion, HLR says “I am very fortunate to be mentored by Peaksneng shop. At the moment my focus is now to be able to have a simple and safe place to live for my family.”
