Kilimanjaro, TZ – Drought on Mt Kilimanjaro and its effects on the Children health at Lasso and Kisuluni Primary Schools – Mar 2023
During these difficult moment of the long drought on Kilimanjaro Slopes, the Kirua Kahe water project has failed to constantly supply enough water to our schools of Kisuluni and Lasso primaries, a challenge which makes a call upon the Lishe Bora team, parents, children and teachers to apply different local means of re-growing their schools gardens.
They manage to build shades on the garden beds and apply necessary mulching continuously to their plants. These local techniques have been benefiting the children on rebuilding their new gardens and nurseries for starting again to harvest their vegetables and banana in the near future. These new gardens are starting to have a promising look after these efforts have been applied.
Together with the above achievements the Lishe Bora Community is still facing a challenge of lack of enough water storage capacity and also reliable source of water supply in the area during these long drought seasons. Lishe Bora and the community is currently working shoulder to shoulder with Tupendane and Better Lives to design a water catchment project from the rain water while also improving the storage capacities by building new water infrastructure system in the area.
Lishe Bora is hoping once the above solutions are well designed and implemented they will then gain back the capacity to continuous grow enough food for their children in the mentioned schools and even being able to help other close families with the same need in the area.
