Moshi, TZ – Water well will assist sustainability of schools’ Grow-own-Breakfast – 31 Aug 2022
The Tupendane team and crane operator are installing concrete culverts that line the new well on the future Rent-to-Own (RTO) home land in Kahe. The well is needed because Tupendane is assisting the children of Kahe with their continuing efforts to Grow-own-Breakfast (GOB) in a sustainable way. The organization is making GOB sustainability a high priority in the third and fourth quarters of the year, and believes that empowering banana and vegetable market growing is a key part of supporting sustainability.
A pilot market garden for banana and vegetable will be developed on the future Rent-to-Own home (RTO) land, which will be an example that guides the schools on how to best produce quality bananas and vegetables to meet the market need. The harvests from the pilot market garden will be combined with the schools’ surplus harvests, in order to grow sufficient quantities to trigger buyers to come to Kahe for buying and hence ensure income for the schools’ GOB program.
The first step on the RTO land is digging a well for irrigation of the banana and vegetable garden, unfortunately the well needs to be deeper than expected and has encountered the challenge of well wall erosion. The solution is adding culverts. The team is glad they have managed to solve the challenge, and now the work of digging will continue down to the required depth for enough water for the pilot market garden.
