Kilimanjaro, TZ – Rollins College group assists Lasso and Kisuluni primary school students to plant vegetables and banana trees – 30 Jun 2022
Students from Rollins College in Florida collaborated with Better Lives and the local social enterprise Lishe Bora in order to arrange a visit. They assisted the Lasso and Kisuluni primary schools to develop their new Grow-own-Breakfast programs by working with the students at the two schools to plant 40 banana trees, make compost and pest repelant sprays, and rebuild 18 organic vegetable garden beds.
Lishe Bora and the two schools are very grateful for the support and volunteer assistance they received from the Rollins group, because it is assisting the schools to build a sustainable breakfast program. They enjoyed hosting the group in their beautiful area very much, but felt bad that the rains made walking a slippery experience in the mud a couple of times!
The visiting students also visited with one of the families to learn about the local ancient culture and history of coffee growing in the area. They also visited two new Village Community Banking Association (VICOBA) groups and saw a flour milling operation.
The host community also benefited economically by providing accommodation, food and transport services to the visitors. The Lishe Bora team is now dreaming of learning English, so that it will be easier for everyone to talk with future visiting groups.
