Kikondo, UG – Wamukisa continues new commercial garden design – 15 July 2020
Using years’ worth of commercial garden data and performance, Michael and his team have decided to switch to growing in clusters of gardens with the purpose of only rotating two quick crops. Additionally, Michael and the team have begun naming their gardens.
Naming the gardens changes the way the team approached the work. It gave each garden, which consists of 12 – 8 x 1 meter bed a purpose behind the name. For instance their first two gardens were named Sara and Robert after Michael and Roses first children. As for the crops, the team has found that cabbage and beans to be their rotational cash crops.
The rotational relay planting routine has simplified the work for the team. Michael has noted that his team has had more time providing mentorship and delivering compost and sprays to the Wamukisa families. Additionally, they expect that the revenue generated from the gardens will become more predictable.
So far the only challenge Wamukisa has faced with the new planting routine is the weather. They started this scheme going into dry season. While the team has enough water, they are unable to fully beat the sun.
Wamukisa hopes to continue finding more sustainable opportunities to finance their organization into self-reliance.
