Kilimanjaro, TZ – ABN Family water connection supports business – 15 Sep 2019
ABN mother uses the money she earned from her home businesses, supported by the water from the Mkyashi Water Project, to pay for all 6 of her children’s school fees in 2019.
ABN Family is connected with water provided by the Mkyashi Water Committee, since then they have been using the water to support her dairy cow and local banana drink (mbege) businesses. As a result, she was able to pay for her children’s school fees in 2019.
Having a water connection in Mkyashi village lifts a large burden off of the recipient’s shoulders. Mkyashi is a village in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Most water points are at the bottom of steep hills meaning many people have to carry 20 liters (5 gallons) buckets from the base of the village area. Receiving a water connection allows families like ABN to use the time their time more efficiently, like a dairy cow or mbege projects to help support their family.
ABN family is working on a biogas system from the cow manure, they’d like to use this as a secondary source of income, but need 2 more cows to produce enough and are facing challenges accessing the capital for this project. The biogas will be used as an alternative fuel for cooking.
Their ultimate dream is to save enough money to build a comfortable house for running their various businesses.
