Kikondo, UG – KGK son, Marvin, takes lead in helping family improve livelihood – 5 Nov 2017
Marvin, one of KGK’s sons, has been running his family’s vegetable kiosk, helping his father extend their vegetable garden, and tending a new chicken project. On top of all of this he recently attended a solar electricity training organized by Wamukisa.
Marvin is the oldest of KGK’s four sons and he takes on much of the responsibility for helping the family get by. His mother died three years ago and his father suffers from AIDS and tuberculosis. Marvin is the family member who most actively attends Wamukisa’s training sessions.
After the expanding their garden the family now averages 3,000 UGS (US $0.91) per day vegetable sales. They also have a poultry project with 100 birds. When each bird is full grown they sell for 25,000 UGS. Marvin has collaborated extensively with Wamukisa to plan and design the project based on Wamukisa’s poultry project and the management principles Wamukisa shares at their training sessions.
Hard work is paying off for Marvin. He has seen his dad’s health stabilize and his brothers enjoy more consistent meals and schooling. His biggest limit is water. In the dry season Marvin spends most of his time fetching water from a spring about 150 meters downhill from his home. He hopes that he can soon connect to either a new government system or one of Wamukisa’s proposed water lines.
