Moshi, TZ – Maendeleo bean farm on target and providing energy to students and community – 15 July 2017
Maendeleo Primary School’s bean farm is coming in well and giving energy to everyone involved. Local experts believe the farm is on pace to meet its harvest targets and everyone is getting excited seeing the lush green field getting fuller and fuller each day. Some parents have been so excited about the impending harvest that they have contributed corns from their farms for the students to eat with the beans.
The School Breakfast Farm Task Force has been instrumental to the program’s success and Task Force members are gaining energy from their success as well as respect from the community. The farm has become a visible sign for the hard work they are doing on behalf of the community’s children.
The new irrigation system has also enabled success. The pumping cost of water is a major expense. An efficient and easy to use system reduces both the time and money spent irrigating.
The farm is still on track for a September harvest. After the harvest, Tupendane and Maendeleo will plan a sustainable planting cycle where some beans are saved and sold from the harvest in order to pay for next year’s planting inputs.
