Kikondo, UG – Wamukisa conducts first community training to improve water harvesting efforts – 3 Apr 2016
Over 30 families attended Wamukisa Support Organization’s first community training. The training focused on the benefits and best practices of water harvesting. With the rainy season just around the corner, the training can make an immediate impact for the families who attended.
There is no public water infrastructure in Kikondo. Water must be fetched from distant springs. This means people can either spend between 15 minutes and an hour fetching water, or they can spend 200-700 TZS (US 10 cents – 35 cents) for a 20 liter bucket of water. Harvesting even one bucket of water per day saves a family time and money they can use to focus on improving their lives.
The training focused on three main points:
- The benefits of harvesting water
- How to harvest water for free using materials found in the environment
- Best practice harvesting tools which a family can invest in
At the end of the training each family designed a system to fit their budget and needs. Over the next month, Wamukisa will visit families check progress towards their plans and to provide improvement advice.
