Moshi, TZ – Family garden enables chicken business – 30 Nov 2014
The SHM family joined the Tupendane garden program in April of 2014. The parents have worked hard with their three children to be successful vegetable gardeners. They been a good example for the community by using best practice gardening techniques to maintain a productive garden.
Each month the family eats about 10,000 TZS (US $6.25) of vegetables from their garden. This reduces the family’s monthly food expenses and ensures that the children are eating healthy vegetables so they can stay healthy and attend school.
They have also been able to sell an average of 13,000 TZS (US $8.13) of vegetables each month. This money has enabled the family to start a small chicken business. They are hoping that if they can continue to maintain a productive garden they can qualify for a small-business loan to expand this business.
