Moshi, TZ – LMK family visit – 28 Mar 2013
The family have harvested all the Ethiopian mustard (loshuu) in two of the early maturing vegetable beds, so it is now time to replant in order to maintain a steady supply for the family to eat. In preparation, they have rebuilt the beds with additional compost and rice hull charcoal.
They have decided to plant kale (sukuma wiki in Swahili), because the Tupendane team has found that it is hardier than the the Ethiopian mustard that the family planted initially. Kale retains more moisture in its leaves than the Ethiopian mustard, and is also very nutritious because it is a source of vitamins A, C and K, has a good amount of calcium for a vegetable, and also supplies folate (water soluble vitamin B) and potassium.
