Utete, TZ – Parmiters students improve local water distribution to school toilet – 1 Aug 2012
The work that Parmiters students did in the summer of 2011 built the foundation for water distribution at Utete Secondary school. All of the water connections put in by the students are still serving the children and teachers at the school. This project was such a success that SEDTrust (WFCF’s partner in Utete), the district water engineer, and the head teacher are drafting a similar design to have water piped directly to the students’ toilets. The design will include a holistic solution to the water distribution problem at the school. This will also include a large water tank (10,000 liters) to make sure the supply of water is constant, as there have been problems with the Utete local water main in recent months.
One of the major challenges the school is facing is controlling the consumption of water due to the school’s small budget allocated to the purchase of water. However, the tank will allow for daily control of water usage and cut down on water wasting.
Overall, the connections implemented last year have caused a reported drop in illness, due to water borne diseases, and have eliminated the risk of crocodile attacks from fetching water from the river. We look forward to continuing to improve every school in the area and to reach our ultimate goal, to have a holistic water system connected to each part of every school’s service area including their toilets, kitchens, hand wash basins, and school FAITH gardens.
