Programs

Organic Vegetable Gardening
Lishe Bora works with families to teach organic gardening best practices that enable families to grow healthy, organic vegetables all year round. This project improves health by ensuring that families can eat chemical-free vegetables every day. The project also improves income as families sell excess vegetables and reduce weekly food expenses.

Water Access
Poor water access is a barrier to life-improvement in the communities Lishe Bora works in. Water is abundant on the mountain, but water delivery infrastructure is poor. Lishe Bora is working with the community on a project to improve water access and enable families to increase agriculture activity and decrease water costs. Lishe Bora also helped reconnect a local primary school with water, which saved students from having to carry water on dangerous roads for the school kitchen to use.

School Partnerships
Lishe Bora partners with two local elementary schools to identify children who will benefit the most from its programs. School partnerships help identify high-need students and provide a platform for spreading awareness of the program and organic agriculture best-practices. School gardens and compost production-lines create hands-on learning opportunities for students and give Lishe Bora the opportunity to build relationships with educators, administrators, and students.

Community

Kilema and Kirua districts are both about a mile above sea level on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Most residents earn around $2.00 per day working on small banana and coffee farms. Community challenges include poor water infrastructure, small plots of land, and declining domestic coffee prices. These challenges shrink the revenue potential of agricultural activities while increasing the costs, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to make a living. FAITH Gardens help farmers diversify their crops and get the most out of their land. Small business loans will help farmers further diversify and become less dependent upon bananas and coffee for income.
