Battambang, KH – Nothing will stop Lin – 21 Jan 2015

Dewey International University (DIU) is a highly regarded, well-known private school in Battambang; many students (including middle and upper class students) dream of attending this school. Lin started at DIU two years ago and is currently in ninth grade.

Lin recalls being depressed on her first day at DIU because her peers were from wealthy families and she came from a very poor family. Before Lin moved to the Children’s Future residential house and began school at DIU, she lived with her parents, grandmother, and two brothers. Her family frequently migrated illegally between Cambodian and Thailand for work. As for her and her siblings, none of them attended school regularly. Fortunately, Lin came to understand that whether a student comes from a rich or poor background, all students have equal rights and should have equal opportunities for receiving a good education. Lin decided to study so that she could ultimately help her family.

Though Lin lacked confidence when she started at DIU, she decided not to let her feeling of intimidation ruin the opportunity that she had received. Today, Lin is very happy and thrives at DIU. Lin states “I gain a lot of knowledge and experience when I study at Dewey. Before, I was not good at subjects like math, chemistry, psychology, and especially geometry. These subjects are important for me to pass because I want to be an engineer in the future. Since I was poor in geometry, I did not think that I could achieve my goal of being an engineer. After studying at Dewey, I have improved in all areas due to my teacher’s helpful teaching style and group learning. I have high hopes that my dreams will come true and have more confidence in myself after having the opportunity to study at Dewey.” When asked how Dewey has changed her life, Lin smiled confidently and said, “I won’t let any problems keep me from achieving my goal.”

Lin hopes that all students at Children’s Future will try hard to study and never give up. Lin does not want students to waste their time and let good opportunities slip through their fingers. “Even if we run into problems, there is always a solution,” Lin states. Lin believes that education is needed in life just like water is needed by a flower.
