In 2016 Wamukisa completed Phase 1 of their community water project. They also offered training sessions about water harvesting and filtering water from cooking and cleaning for use irrigating gardens.

Improved water access enable Wamukisa to expand their demonstration organic vegetable gardens and begin training families about soil nourishment and vegetable growing.

In total, 8 families started vegetable gardens with Wamukisa in 2016. Those families are working to achieve consistent harvests.

Wamukisa also started a commercial garden which is intended to contribute towards the team’s sustainability and also improve income earning opportunities for local families.

Kikondo, UG – Review Water Project Phase 1 successes and challenges after year one – 16 Dec 2016

Wamukisa opened 2016 with the completion of Phase 1 of their community water distribution system. They are ending 2016 by reflecting on the project’s challenges and successes and looking forward to improvement priorities in 2017.

Hosting Student Groups

Wamukisa did not host any groups of international students in 2016. They did began planning the development of a camping area for visiting groups and they hope to take part in Group Hosting Training with Better Lives in 2016 in preparation for hosting groups in 2017 and beyond.

23 families benefitted from improved water access. Wamukisa’s water project reduced water bills and time spent collecting water by half. Their water harvesting and recycling training sessions helped families see how they could maintain small gardens even without a direct water connection at home.

Kikondo, UG – Wamukisa completes first phase of community water access project – 20 Jan 2016

Water is finally flowing uphill in Kikondo. On 17 January 2016, after more than a year of planning, designing, and building, the Wamukisa garden shop could finally celebrate the completion of the first phase of their water project. Water was pumped 310 meters (30 meters of incline) from a natural spring to a 5,000 liter water tank at Wamukisa Garden Shop.

Path Stage: Apply Knowledge

23 families attended Wamukisa’s soil nourishment training session. 8 of those families moved on to start their own gardens. 15 are planning to apply this knowledge in 2017.

Kikondo, UG – Soil nourishing training gets families excited for vegetable gardens – 28 May 2016

Wamukisa held their first organic agriculture training today. Over 20 families came out to attend the training, which focused on the benefits and basic concepts of soil nourishment.

All 8 families that started gardens in 2016 are still working to achieve consistent harvests. Their efforts have been affected by a drought which they hope will not last through the next rainy season.

Kikondo, UG – Grandmother opens garden for grandchildren’s health – 5 Aug 2016

When Christina Mulyansaka saw Wamukisa’s demonstration vegetable garden, she knew she would do whatever was necessary to start her own garden. She has struggled for years to keep her seven grandchildren well-nourished and a constant supply of vegetables has been critical to preventing anemia.

Wamukisa did not run Earn Income programs with families in 2016. They hope improving water access and lessons they learn from their commercial garden will enable them to move families to the Earn Income path stage in 2017.

Kikondo, UG – Wamukisa on pace for a holiday harvest from commercial gardens – 11 Nov 2016

The Wamukisa garden shop team continues to expand their commercial garden and, despite bad weather, their first beds are on pace for a holiday harvest. Manager Michael Kiwanuka has worked to give his team a singular focus on the commercial gardens because he hopes a profitable and successful harvest will open new opportunities for Wamukisa and the community.

Kikondo, UG – Employee sets SMART saving goal and succeeds, purchasing new home – 16 Dec 2016

Wamukisa manager Michael Kiwanuka is celebrating an extra special year-end accomplishment: he bought his own home! He plans to move into the new home in early 2017. After moving in he hopes to start considering marriage and starting a family.
