Temeke, TZ – Project handoff highlighted by student performances

Student WASH clubs performed songs to teach their peers best hygiene practices in Temeke Municipality. The performances were the highlight of WASH project hand-over ceremonies, which celebrated the completion of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects at 13 schools in the municipality.

The Student WASH clubs were initially trained over a two day period. Each club averages 30 students. During the training club members were taught to identify common diseases afflicting them at home and school. They then learned how these diseases are transmitted and how they could avoid the transmission of diseases.

The interactive training included song and dance, practical experience making hand wash stations, and demonstrations of good handwashing techniques. Club members learned how to develop a timetable to ensure they performed their WASH responsibilities on time. These responsibilities will help ensure the school environment and toilets are clean and hygienic for their peers.

The projects were overseen by Sanitation and Water Action (SAWA) and included school water connections, hand wash stations, and toilet improvements. Only one school in the municipality is still waiting to complete their projects. Tungi School is still waiting for the electric connection which is necessary to run their water pump.

SAWA’s next steps for the projects include finalizing and inspecting work at Tungi School, monitoring the quality of operations and maintenance at all schools, and impact evaluation of all projects in Temeke.
