Water and Sanitation Infrastructure

Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more. Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Infrastructure at schools increases student attendance and performance by reducing the number of days students miss due to illness.

What We Do
Clean water projects include wells, water connections, and distribution points. Hygiene and sanitation projects include building schools and kitchens at schools. WASH Infrastructure at schools enables those schools to start breakfast programs.

How We Do It
Better Lives collaborates with its partners to help ensure clean, affordable water access and proper sanitation and hygiene facilities for schools and communities. Local partners help build community buy-in and facilitate implementation. When needed, experts from SAWA are consulted.

Community WASH projects are built in collaboration with end-users. Better Lives’ partners work with end-users to create payment models that generate maintenance funds to ensure the long-term sustainability of projects. Partners also provide support for School WASH projects to help schools maintain their facilities.
