Utete, TZ – Mama’s Group receives a cow loan – 11 Oct 2013

A women’s group have received a loan for a pregnant and lactating cow. They have named their cow Zawadi ( Present in Swahili ), and she is already producing 5 liters of milk per day that they are selling for an income of $2.60 per day / US$77 per month! A wonderful boost to the group members’ income!

The local veterinarian came by to check on the Zawadi and said that she was stressed because she missed her calf. Happy cows produce more milk, so the group asked the calf’s owner if the mother could have her calf with her in order to reduce her stress. As Zawadi becomes more comfortable, they expect her to double or triple her milk production to 10 to15 liters a day giving them an income of $155 – $232 a month.
