Utete, TZ – ATN Family Garden – 9 Dec 2013
The rains have finally come to Kindwitwi and it is a huge relief. Plants that have struggled under the intense sun for months are finally getting some respite and the gardens are looking green.
The ATN family garden is continuing to come in very nicely. They are enjoying eating some leafy greens as well as eggplants. They have not started selling vegetables yet but they hope that with the rains their yields will increase and they will be able to sell vegetables to make some additional income. The rains should also helps some new crops come in and add nutritional diversity to the family’s diet.
The major challenges facing the ATN family are the same challenges facing almost all of the farmers in Kindwitwi. Pests are disturbing cabbage and eggplant crops and opportunistic chickens are taking advantage of damaged fences to sneak into gardens and enjoy the feast.
KCM – the Kindwitwi garden shop team – team members are working hard with Better Lives to identify organic solutions to the pest problems as well as better methods for building fences.
